Save Our Scenery - Protecting Our Heritage Coastline

Who Are SOS?

Save Our Scenery (S.O.S.) held its first meeting on May 6th 2005 in response to a public meeting called by the then Mayor of Llandudno, Janet Finch Saunders. The key speakers at this meeting were:

  1. Professor Peter Cobbold who spoke against the proposal to a site a wind farm consisting of 220+ turbines in Llandudno and Colwyn Bay.

  2. Npower Renewables who presented their proposal to establish the largest offshore wind farm in the UK in our bay. The turbines will be the largest so far at some 520 feet.

The mood of the meeting was clear: A clear majority were against the proposal. Soon after - SOS was formed.

Npower Renewables want to site the largest offshore wind farm in the UK in our bay. We already have 30 wind turbines off Prestatyn some 14 miles off our heritage coastline but they currently intrude upon our bay on clear days. Consent already exists for a further 30 (Rhyl Flats consented in 2003) This will take the cumulative total to 60. The Gwynt-Y-Mor (Windy Sea ) will add a further 200+ of the largest turbines yet at 520 feet. These will be approximately 5 miles off the Llandudno Promenade. A total of 260… a fence of steel will enclose the bay.
